The matchbox-making town of Kovilpatti is also known for sparking its population’s sweet tooth. Its local favourite, Kadalai Mittai is made with ground peanuts sprouting from the region’s black soil, hand-pounded jaggery, and water from the River Thamirabarani for a characteristic taste.
